Behavior

Behavior should be approached through a compassionate lens. There are four main purposes for behaviors. Everybody EATS:

  • Escape (maybe the task is too easy, hard, boring, scary)

  • Attention (I want social interaction)

  • Tangible (I want that thing I love the most)

  • Sensory (Something feels good to do)

Emotional regulation

…is a struggle, for many. We call emotions “feelings” because emotions are an experience. Our ability to self-regulate affects behavior and sensory processing.

Visuals help us stay mindful. Externalizing emotions is a mindful strategy. Once we understand where we are, we can choose to move forward.

Sensory processing

The sensory system is foundational to academic learning. Our senses need to be in alignment for us to feel safe enough to learn. This is why Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), and home yoga exercises are so important for our academic success.
